The colloquium takes place in Aachen (Germany) which is spa town located near the borders with Belgium and the Netherlands. Germany’s westernmost city offers some signifant cultural and historical sights such as the Cathedral (Aachener Dom) with its Treasury, the Gothic Townhall and the Ludwig Forum for International Art.

Aachen's industries include science, engineering and information technology. In 2009, Aachen was ranked eighth among cities in Germany for innovation.

The colloquium itself takes place at the Institute of Applied Mechanics.
